MHT and CV Health

Sponsored by Pfizer

  • Dr Denise Black

Heart disease is the #1 killer of women after menopause, orders of magnitude higher than any other cause. In spite of this, most women do not identify heart disease as their greatest health risk as they age.

There are many differences in the presentation and diagnosis of heart disease in women compared to men. Most primary prevention studies involving low dose ASA, statins, and others, may have shown some benefit in men but few have shown any benefit for women.

The issue of the impact of menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) on heart disease risk in post-‐menopausal women has been murky and at times conflicting. During this symposium we will review the evidence for the “critical timing hypothesis”, as well as some recent RCT data looking at the impact of MHT on cardiovascular disease in women.
